A bar with a central eagle is awarded for second and subsequent awards of the DFC.

Recipients are entitled to use the postnominals 'D.F.C. and Bar' or 'D.F.C. and Bars'.Ā 

From 1918 to 1972 the DFC was awarded to 2,391 Australians, along with 144 first Bars and five second Bars for subsequent awards. Most of the awards were won in World War II.
