The Multinational Force and Observers (MFO) Medal is awarded to Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel for their service in the Sinai Peninsula as part of Operation Mazurka. The MFO is a non-UN peacekeeping force established in 1981 to monitor the terms of the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel. Australia is one of the 13 countries contributing personnel to this mission.
Australian service members qualify for the MFO medal after completing a minimum of 170 days of continuous or aggregated service. The medal was officially approved for wear by Australian personnel in January 2017, recognising their contributions to the mission. The MFO medal is bronze and round, featuring the MFO emblem on one side, with the inscription "United in Service for Peace" on the reverse.
The ribbon is MFO orange with a white stripe flanked by two green stripes, symbolising the multinational cooperation involved in the mission. The medal can be awarded only once, but subsequent six-month periods of service are recognised with numeral devices.
Australia's contribution to the MFO under Operation Mazurka involves personnel from the Navy, Army, and Air Force, who serve in the Sinai for 6-9 months at a time, assisting with border monitoring, operational briefings, and supporting MFO Headquarters.
