The VC was originally instituted in 1856 as the premier award for gallantry and available to all ranks: For acts of the most conspicuous gallantry, pre-eminent acts of valour or self-sacrifice or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy.ย
Recipients are entitled to use the post nominals V.C.
The VC was awarded to Australians under the Imperial system of awards, with 96 Australians receiving the award.ย
It was decided to retain the VC as the pre-eminent gallantry award in the Australian system.
