VD | Volunteer Officers’ Decoration
Instituted in 1892 and extended to officers of the Colonial Volunteer Forces in 1894.
It recognised:
- 20 years’ commissioned service in the Army or Navy; and
- Up to 10 years’ prior service in the ranks could count toward the qualifying period.
Recipients are entitled to the post-nominals V.D.
The first awards were gazetted in November 1895 and the last in July 1901, with the Decoration superseded by the Colonial Auxiliary Forces Decoration in 1899. However, it continued to be awarded outside Australia until 1930.
