The Story

Second United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF II)

The Second United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF 2) was established in October 1973 to supervise the ceasefire between Egyptian and Israeli forces. Following the agreements reached on 18 January 1974 and 4 September 1975, UNEF II also supervised the redeployment of Egyptian and Israeli forces and monitored the buffer zones created under those agreements. The mandate for this mission expired in July 1979, and the troops were withdrawn.

The UNEF II medal ribbon features a wide central band of sand or buff colour, symbolising the Sinai Desert, with two narrow dark blue lines representing the Suez Canal. At either end of the ribbon are wide bars of UN blue. The eligibility period for receiving the medal was 90 days of service in the mission.

Countries that provided troops to UNEF II included: Australia, Austria, Canada, Finland, Ghana, Indonesia, Ireland, Nepal, Panama, Peru, Poland, Senegal, and Sweden.
