The Story

United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP)

The United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) was established in March 1964 to help prevent the recurrence of fighting between the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot communities. The mission’s mandate includes contributing to the maintenance and restoration of law and order and facilitating a return to normal conditions. Following the hostilities of 1974, UNFICYP’s role was expanded to include supervising the ceasefire and maintaining a buffer zone between the lines of the Cyprus National Guard and the Turkish and Turkish Cypriot forces. The mission continues to this day.

The UNFICYP medal features three equal bars: a central white bar flanked by two UN blue bars, representing the United Nations. These bars are separated by two narrow dark blue bands symbolising the Mediterranean Sea. The qualifying time for the medal is three months of service in the mission.

Countries that have contributed troops to this mission include Austria, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hungary, India, Ireland, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Slovenia, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Civilian police have been provided by Australia, Austria, Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden.
