The Story

United Nations Human Rights Verification Mission in Guatemala (MINUGUA)

In September 1994, the United Nations General Assembly decided to establish the United Nations Human Rights Verification Mission in Guatemala (MINUGUA) following a recommendation by the Secretary-General. The mission was created in response to a persistent pattern of human rights abuses in Guatemala, with the goal of monitoring and verifying the human rights situation. MINUGUA operated until its conclusion in May 1997.

The MINUGUA medal ribbon features the colours of the Guatemalan flag, symbolising the country, brought together by a central stripe of UN blue, representing the United Nations. To qualify for the medal, personnel needed to complete a minimum of 90 days of service in the mission.

Countries that contributed personnel to MINUGUA included: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, Germany, Italy, Norway, the Russian Federation, Singapore, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, Uruguay, the United States of America, and Venezuela.
