The Story

United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO)

The United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) was established in May 1991 to facilitate a referendum allowing the people of Western Sahara to choose between integration with Morocco or independence. The mission was tasked with overseeing this referendum process, which remains its primary mandate.

The MINURSO medal ribbon features a very wide central band of sandy brown, symbolising the Sahara Desert, with two narrow bands of UN blue at each end, representing the United Nations. A minimum of 90 days of service in the mission is required to qualify for the award of the medal.

Countries that have contributed troops or military observers to MINURSO include: Argentina, Australia, Austria, Bangladesh, Belgium, Canada, the People's Republic of China, Egypt, El Salvador, Finland, France, Ghana, Greece, Guinea, Honduras, India, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Peru, Poland, Portugal, the Republic of Korea, the Russian Federation, Switzerland, Tunisia, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

As of now, MINURSO remains a purely observation mission, continuing to monitor the situation on the ground. However, if its mandate expands to facilitate the referendum, the number of troops and contributing countries may increase.
