The Story

United Nations Observer Group in Central America (ONUCA)

The United Nations Observer Group in Central America (ONUCA) was established in December 1989 to verify the termination of external support to irregular forces and insurrectionist movements, as well as to ensure that the territory of one State was not used to launch attacks on other States in the region. ONUCA's operations covered Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. The mission concluded in January 1992.

The ONUCA medal ribbon consists of five narrow green stripes representing the five participating countries, separated by four equal white stripes. These central stripes are flanked by two sea blue bands symbolising the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea, with broader UN blue bands on the edges representing the United Nations’ presence in the region. A minimum of 90 days of service in the mission was required to qualify for the medal.

Troops and observers for ONUCA were provided by Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Ecuador, India, Ireland, Spain, Sweden, and Venezuela. Notably, Venezuela contributed a 700-man infantry battalion from May to July 1990 to oversee the demobilisation, disarmament, and resettlement of the Contra factions in Nicaragua.
