The United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor (UNTAET) was established on 25 October 1999, by Security Council Resolution 1272. The mission's primary objectives were to provide security, maintain law and order throughout the territory of East Timor, establish an effective administration, and assist in the development of civil and social services. In addition, UNTAET played a key role in supporting capacity-building efforts for self-government, ensuring East Timor’s smooth transition to independence after years of conflict.
The UNAMET / UNTAET / UNMISET medal was established on 9 December 1999 to recognise those who served in these missions. The ribbon design features two outer bands of UN blue, symbolising the UN’s presence in East Timor. Inside the blue bands, two equal bars of crimson and sunrise yellow represent the brilliant sunrises and sunsets of East Timor, while the central white stripe symbolises peace and hope—the ultimate goal of the mission.
Personnel who served a minimum of 90 days in any of the following missions:
- UNAMET (United Nations Mission in East Timor)
- UNTAET (United Nations Transitional Administration in East Timor), or
- UNMISET (United Nations Mission of Support in East Timor)
are eligible for this medal.
This medal symbolises the international effort to ensure peace, stability, and eventual independence for East Timor.
