The Story

United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF)

The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) was established in June 1974 to supervise the ceasefire between Israel and Syria, monitor the disengagement (redeployment) of Syrian and Israeli forces, and maintain a buffer zone as outlined in the Agreement on Disengagement between Israeli and Syrian Forces of 31 May 1974. UNDOF continues to perform these functions effectively with the cooperation of the parties involved.

The UNDOF medal ribbon features a central stripe of UN blue with a red line down the middle representing the UN-patrolled Area of Separation. On either side of this are two narrow black stripes, symbolising the volcanic rock of the Golan region, flanked by two narrow white bands, representing the snow on Mount Hermon. At either end are wide bands of burgundy, symbolising the purple haze at sunset and the native thistles of the Golan. Ninety days of service is required to qualify for the medal.

Countries currently providing troops to this mission include Austria, Canada, Finland, Iran, Japan, Peru, Poland, and the Slovak Republic. Military Observers from Poland who are assigned to UNDOF as their parent mission and then detached for service in UNGOMAP are also eligible for the UNDOF medal with a clasp indicating service with UNGOMAP after 90 days of qualifying service.
