United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF I)
The United Nations Emergency Force (UNEF I) was established in November 1956 to oversee and supervise the cessation of hostilities following the Suez Crisis, including the withdrawal of armed forces from France, Israel, and the United Kingdom from Egyptian territory. After the withdrawal, UNEF I acted as a buffer between Egyptian and Israeli forces. The mission was terminated in June 1967 at the request of Egypt.
The UNEF I medal ribbon features a sand or buff-coloured background, symbolising the Sinai Desert, with a wide central band of UN blue. Two thin lines, dark blue and green, appear at either end of the ribbon, representing the Suez Canal and the Nile Valley, respectively. A minimum of 90 days of service was required to qualify for the medal.
Countries that contributed troops to this mission include: Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, India, Norway, Sweden, and Yugoslavia.
