United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL)
The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was established in March 1978 to confirm the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, restore international peace and security, and assist the Government of Lebanon in re-establishing its effective authority in the region. The mission continues to operate to the present day.
The UNIFIL medal ribbon consists of three equal bands of colour: UN blue, green, and UN blue, representing the United Nations and Lebanon. These bands are separated by two white stripes, each bisected by a narrow red line, further symbolising the flags of the UN and Lebanon. To qualify for the medal, a service period of 90 days within the mission is required.
Countries that have provided troops to UNIFIL include: Canada, Fiji, Finland, France, Ghana, Iran, Ireland, Italy, Nepal, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Nigeria, Norway, Poland, Senegal, and Sweden. Military Observers from Fiji, Ghana, and Nepal, who were assigned to UNIFIL as their parent mission and later detached for service with UNGOMAP, are also eligible for the UNIFIL medal with a clasp indicating service with UNGOMAP after 90 days of qualifying service.
