The Story

United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM)

The United Nations Iraq-Kuwait Observation Mission (UNIKOM) was established in April 1991 to monitor a demilitarized zone (DMZ) along the boundary between Iraq and Kuwait, as well as the Khor Abdullah waterway. This mission was part of the efforts to maintain peace and security following the Gulf War.

The UNIKOM medal ribbon features a narrow central stripe of UN blue, symbolising the United Nations, flanked by two broad bands of buff or desert colour, representing the desert environment of the region. To qualify for the UNIKOM medal, personnel needed to complete 90 days of service with the mission.

Countries that contributed troops or military observers to UNIKOM included: Argentina, Austria, Bangladesh, Canada, Chile, the People's Republic of China, Denmark, Fiji, Finland, France, Germany, Ghana, Greece, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, the Russian Federation, Senegal, Singapore, Sweden, Thailand, Turkey, the United Kingdom, the United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.
