The Story

United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS)

The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) was established by Security Council Resolution 1590 on 24 March 2005, following the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People's Liberation Movement/Army (SPLM/A) on 9 January 2005. UNMIS was tasked with supporting the implementation of the CPA, which ended more than two decades of civil war between the North and South of Sudan.

UNMIS was mandated to perform several key functions, including providing assistance in implementing the peace agreement, monitoring the ceasefire, facilitating the delivery of humanitarian aid, and promoting the protection and promotion of human rights in the region. The mission was critical in supporting the transitional period outlined in the CPA, including the administration of the referendum on South Sudan’s independence.

On 9 January 2011, a referendum was held, and the people of Southern Sudan voted overwhelmingly in favour of secession. As a result, on 9 July 2011, South Sudan declared its independence. This also marked the completion of UNMIS's mandate, and the mission officially wound up operations on the same day.

In response to the newly independent nation, the UN Security Council established the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to provide continued support to South Sudan as it worked to build a stable and secure state.
