The Story

United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS)

On 9 July 2011, South Sudan became the world's newest country. The birth of the Republic of South Sudan marked the culmination of a six-year peace process that began with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) on 9 January 2005 between the Government of Sudan and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM). The CPA ended more than 20 years of war and established a framework for the interim period, during which the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) supported its implementation.

A key provision of the CPA was a referendum to determine the status of Southern Sudan, which was held as scheduled in January 2011. In the referendum, 98.83% of participants voted in favour of independence. The United Nations Secretary-General welcomed the final results, stating they reflected the will of the people of Southern Sudan.

Following the end of the interim period and the declaration of South Sudan's independence in July 2011, the United Nations Security Council established the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) with the adoption of resolution 1996 (2011) on 8 July 2011. The mission was tasked with supporting the new nation in areas of security, governance, and development.

Personnel for UNMISS have been drawn from the following countries: Australia, Bangladesh, Benin, Bolivia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Cambodia, Canada, China, Denmark, Ecuador, Egypt, El Salvador, Fiji, Germany, Greece, Guatemala, Guinea, India, Japan, Jordan, Kenya, Kyrgyzstan, Malaysia, Mali, Moldova, Mongolia, Namibia, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Papua New Guinea, Paraguay, Peru, Philippines, Poland, Republic of Korea, Romania, Russian Federation, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, Tanzania, Timor-Leste, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Yemen, and Zambia.
