United Nations Security Force in West New Guinea (UNSF/UNTEA)
The United Nations Security Force (UNSF) was established in October 1962 to maintain peace and security in West New Guinea (West Irian) during the territory's transitional period under the United Nations Temporary Executive Authority (UNTEA). This arrangement was part of an agreement between Indonesia and the Kingdom of the Netherlands. UNSF was tasked with monitoring the ceasefire and ensuring law and order until the transfer of authority to Indonesia was completed. The mission fulfilled its mandate and was withdrawn in April 1963.
The UNSF medal ribbon features a UN blue background with three centred narrow stripes in dark green, white, and light green. The dark green symbolises the region's jungle and swampland, white represents the snow-capped mountains, and pale green signifies the coral beaches of the area.
Troops for the mission were contributed by Canada, Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), India, Ireland, Nigeria, Pakistan, Sweden, and the United States of America.
