The Story

The United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS) was established by United Nations Security Council Resolution 2043, adopted on 21 April 2012, for an initial period of 90 days. The mission was tasked with monitoring a cessation of armed violence by all parties and supporting the full implementation of the six-point peace plan developed by Joint Special Envoy Kofi Annan to end the Syrian conflict.

While there was a brief lull in violence after the mission was deployed, hostilities soon resumed. By 15 June 2012, the security situation in Syria had worsened significantly, leading UNSMIS to suspend its activities due to the intensification of armed violence across the country.

On 20 July 2012, the Security Council extended the mission for an additional 30 days, with the stipulation that any further extensions would be contingent upon the Secretary-General confirming, and the Security Council agreeing, that the use of heavy weapons had ceased and violence had sufficiently reduced to allow UNSMIS to effectively carry out its mandate.

As these conditions were not met, UNSMIS' mandate expired on 19 August 2012, marking the end of its mission.
