The United Nations Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) was established by the Security Council on 3 June 2013 through Resolution 2102. Its primary mandate is to support the Federal Government of Somalia in establishing peace, security, and stability in the country. UNSOM focuses on a broad range of goals, including governance, state-building, security sector reform, and human rights. The mission also plays a key role in facilitating political dialogue and supporting the development of Somalia’s legal and institutional frameworks for future elections and political stability.
UNSOM collaborates closely with the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), as well as other regional and international partners, to support the government in addressing challenges posed by extremist groups, humanitarian crises, and conflict. Additionally, UNSOM monitors and reports on human rights violations and supports efforts to strengthen the rule of law in the country.
Personnel who serve in UNSOM for a minimum of 90 days are eligible to receive the UNSOM Medal, which recognises their contributions toward peacekeeping and stabilisation efforts in Somalia.
This mission builds on the legacy of earlier UN operations in Somalia, including UNOSOM I, which was established in 1992 (Security Council Resolution 751) to monitor the ceasefire in Mogadishu between warring factions. This earlier mission involved the deployment of 50 unarmed UN military observers to maintain peace along the demarcation line dividing the city. The experiences and lessons from previous missions contribute to the operational framework of UNSOM today.
UNSOM continues to operate in a complex and challenging environment, helping to rebuild Somalia after decades of conflict and civil unrest.
