The Story

The United Nations Special Service Medal (UNSSM) was established in June 1995 to recognise military personnel and civilian police who serve in United Nations roles outside of the established peacekeeping missions or UN Headquarters. This medal acknowledges contributions made by those working in specialised UN missions or agencies, such as the UNHCR or UNSCOM, or in specific operations that do not fall under the broader peacekeeping framework.

To qualify for the UNSSM, personnel must serve for a minimum period of 90 days in their assigned role. The ribbon of the medal features a large blue stripe framed by two white stripes, representing the UN’s colours. Each recipient's medal includes a bar identifying the specific theatre or United Nations organisation where the service was performed, such as the name of the country or the relevant UN agency, adding a unique element to reflect the location or mission.

The UNSSM serves as a vital recognition of the significant work and dedication provided by personnel in varying, often challenging, environments around the globe where formal peacekeeping missions are not established.
