United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG)
The United Nations Transition Assistance Group (UNTAG) was established in April 1989 to oversee the transition to independence in Namibia through free and fair elections under United Nations supervision and control. The mission was initially mandated for one year and successfully concluded in March 1990.
The UNTAG medal ribbon features five equal stripes in black, yellow, red, green, and royal blue, representing the five Olympic rings and symbolising the five continental regions of the world, all of which were represented by either the military or civilian police components of UNTAG. These central stripes are flanked by bars in a buff or sand colour, representing the Kalahari and Namib deserts, with UN blue stripes at each end. Qualifying service for the medal is 90 days.
Countries that provided troops or Military Observers to UNTAG include: Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, Finland, India, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Malaysia, Pakistan, Panama, Peru, Poland, Senegal, Spain, Sudan, Sweden, Switzerland, Togo, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and Yugoslavia.
Countries that contributed civilian police to the mission include: Austria, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belgium, Canada, Egypt, Fiji, the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), the German Democratic Republic (GDR), Ghana, Guyana, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Jamaica, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, New Zealand, Nigeria, Norway, Pakistan, Singapore, Sweden, and Tunisia.
