The Story

United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO & UNOGIL)

The United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO) was established in June 1948 to assist the UN Mediator and the Truce Commission in supervising the truce in Palestine, as called for by the Security Council. Since its inception, UNTSO has taken on various tasks assigned by the Security Council, including observing the ceasefires following the 1967 Arab-Israeli War in the Suez Canal area and the Golan Heights. Currently, UNTSO assists and cooperates with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in carrying out their missions. Observer groups are stationed in Beirut and Cairo, with liaison offices in Amman and Gaza City. UNTSO has also provided Military Observer cadres for the initial setup of missions such as UNGOMAP, UNIMOG, UNIKOM, and UNPROFOR.

The UNTSO medal ribbon consists of a UN blue background with two narrow white stripes, symbolising the colours of the United Nations. Six months of service is required to be eligible for the UNTSO medal.

Countries that have provided Military Observers for UNTSO, eligible for this medal, include: Australia, Argentina, Belgium, Burma, Canada, Chile, the People’s Republic of China, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Ireland, Italy, Nepal, the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Norway, Peru, Portugal, the Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, Sweden, Switzerland, and Thailand. Additionally, Military Observers from Austria, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Ireland, and Sweden who were originally assigned to UNTSO and then detached for service with UNGOMAP are eligible for the UNTSO medal with a clasp indicating service with UNGOMAP after 90 days of qualifying service.

At present, UNTSO continues to assist and cooperate with UNDOF in the Israel-Syria sector (Golan Heights) and with UNIFIL in the Israel-Lebanon sector.
